Australia is a popular goal for nurses from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and across India. To work there as a registered nurse you need registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Ahpra (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) runs the paperwork for the Board. Your visa is a separate process run by the Department of Home Affairs.
The NMBA is clear that the two are separate: success in one does not guarantee success in the other (NMBA before you apply). This guide walks through the registration steps in order, with official fees checked on 31 Oct 2026. Open each link before you pay.

Fee notes: the NMBA fees page still shows a registration fee of AUD 185, while its September 2025 notice sets AUD 193, so confirm the amount when you apply. NCLEX says its registration fee for Australian candidates rises to USD 350 from 1 February 2027 (NCLEX fees).
Step 1: Do the Self-check and find your stream
Every internationally qualified nurse or midwife (IQNM) starts with the free Self-check on the NMBA IQNM pages. Your answers place you in one of three streams (NMBA assessment model):
- Stream A: your qualification is substantially equivalent to an Australian one. You complete Orientation Part 1 and then apply for registration.
- Stream B: your qualification is relevant but not substantially equivalent. You must pass the outcomes-based assessment (an MCQ exam and then an OSCE) before applying.
- Stream C: you need to upgrade your qualification first, for example to a nursing bachelor degree (Steps after Self-check).
Your stream can change after Ahpra checks your documents against your answers. Answer honestly and keep your GNM or BSc Nursing certificates, transcripts and State Nursing Council registration ready.
Langkah 2: Lulus tes bahasa Inggris Anda
The English language skills registration standard took effect on 18 March 2025, and minimum scores changed again for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026 (Ahpra accepted tests):
| Tes | Overall | Mendengarkan | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.5 | 7 |
| OET | n/a | 350 | 360 | 350 | 360 |
| PTE Academic | 63 | 58 | 59 | 60 | 76 |
| TOEFL iBT | 91 | 22 | 22 | 23 | 24 |
Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency are also accepted. Rules from the same page:
- Results are valid for two years before the date you lodge your registration application.
- You can use one sitting, or up to two sittings no more than 12 months apart, from the same test provider.
- IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days is accepted and does not count as an extra sitting.
- At-home and remotely proctored tests are not accepted. The one exception is the OET computer test taken at a test centre.
- If you tested before 23 April 2026, the older scores apply to that test (for OET: B in listening, reading and speaking, C+ in writing).
Step 3: Pay the IQNM assessment and finish Orientation Part 1
After the Self-check you pay the non-refundable IQNM assessment fee. It covers Orientation Part 1, an online course about Australia and its health system, and Ahpra's review of your documents (Steps after Self-check). Stream B candidates go through a Portfolio stage where Ahpra reviews their documentation.
Step 4: Take the MCQ exam, which is the NCLEX-RN
For registered nurses in Stream B, the MCQ exam is the NCLEX-RN, delivered at Pearson VUE centres (NMBA RN exams). Ahpra must authorise you before you book. India is one of the 19 international NCLEX locations (NCLEX testing locations), so you can sit it at home and pay the USD 150 international scheduling fee.
Already passed the NCLEX-RN for another regulator? The NMBA says you may be able to transfer your result in certain cases. You must request this before you apply for registration, and it can take up to six weeks.
Step 5: Pass the OSCE in Australia
The OSCE is an in-person clinical exam in a simulation centre. The NMBA OSCE page lists Adelaide or Melbourne as locations (NMBA OSCE). You can only sit it after passing the MCQ, and you pay AUD 4,000 before your date is confirmed. A pass is valid for five years. The NMBA, Ahpra and the exam centre do not run OSCE preparation courses. You will need to travel to Australia for the exam, so check Home Affairs for the right visa for that trip.
Step 6: Apply for registration
You submit your application with the application and registration fees. Ahpra then checks your documents and verifies your identity. If you live overseas and cannot complete the local ID check, you receive an in-principle approval letter instead of a registration email (registration stages).
Ahpra aims to finish within four to six weeks of receiving all documents. International applications that need a Board decision take about eight to ten weeks. Every IQNM registrant must also complete Orientation Part 2.
Step 7: Skills assessment and visa
For skilled migration you may need a separate skills assessment from ANMAC. The modified assessment (AUD 395) is for nurses already registered in Australia or New Zealand (ANMAC modified assessment). The full assessment is AUD 595 (ANMAC fees). ANMAC looks at work experience as well, so a positive skills assessment does not guarantee NMBA registration.
Common visa options include the employer-sponsored Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) and the permanent, invitation-only Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189). We could not read the fee and eligibility details on those pages when we checked, so check the official page for current costs.

Common mistakes and scams to avoid
- Booking an at-home English test. Ahpra rejects them. Check the post-23 April 2026 OET scores, which are higher for reading and speaking.
- Paying for "OSCE guarantees". No one can promise a pass, and the NMBA and Ahpra run no prep courses of their own.
- Treating ANMAC approval as registration. They are different bodies with different rules.
- Fake job offers that skip registration. You need NMBA registration before you can work as a nurse.
- Unregistered agents. Indian recruiting agents should be registered; check on eMigrate and read the MEA recruitment FAQ. Then run them through our free fake-agent checker.

FAQ
Do Indian nurses need the NCLEX for Australia? If the Self-check places you in Stream B as a registered nurse, yes. The NMBA uses the NCLEX-RN as its MCQ exam. Stream A nurses do not sit the exams.
What OET score does Ahpra need? For tests taken on or after 23 April 2026: 350 in listening, 360 in reading, 350 in writing and 360 in speaking.
Can I take the OSCE in India? No. It is held in person in Australia. You can take the NCLEX-RN part in India.
I already work as a nurse in the UK. Is there a faster route? Possibly. A standard that took effect in 2025 created faster pathways for nurses with at least 1,800 hours of practice in an approved comparable jurisdiction. At launch these were the UK, Ireland, the US, Ontario, British Columbia, Singapore and Spain; India was not on the list (NMBA media release). Check the current IQRN standard.
Which visa do nurses use for Australia? Options include the employer-sponsored Skills in Demand (482) visa and skilled visas such as subclass 189. Check Home Affairs for current rules and costs.
