Three sample questions

1. Ergänzen Sie: „Herr Yılmaz soll viel trinken, ___ seine Nieren gut arbeiten können.“

  1. weil
  2. um
  3. deshalb
  4. damit
Show the answer

D. damit

Rule: 'damit' introduces a purpose clause with its own subject and the verb at the end: '…, damit seine Nieren gut arbeiten können.' 'um' must be followed by 'zu' + infinitive and cannot have a separate subject. 'weil' gives a reason, but working kidneys are the goal, not the cause of drinking. 'deshalb' is an adverb meaning 'therefore' and needs the verb directly after it.

2. Sie beenden ein strukturiertes Telefonat (SBAR) mit einer Empfehlung. Welche Formulierung passt am besten?

  1. Sie müssen sofort kommen, sonst passiert was.
  2. Ich bitte Sie, sich die Patientin innerhalb der nächsten 30 Minuten anzusehen.
  3. Vielleicht könnte man eventuell irgendwann mal nach ihr schauen.
  4. Machen Sie, was Sie für richtig halten, mir ist das egal.

B. Ich bitte Sie, sich die Patientin innerhalb der nächsten 30 Minuten anzusehen.

Principle: the 'R' in SBAR (Recommendation) states clearly what you need and by when, using a polite but direct request. 'Ich bitte Sie, … innerhalb der nächsten 30 Minuten …' is specific and professional. 'Sie müssen sofort kommen, sonst passiert was' is a threat-like order. 'Mir ist das egal' gives no recommendation and sounds unprofessional. 'Vielleicht könnte man eventuell irgendwann mal …' piles up softeners and gives no clear request.

3. Formen Sie in den Nominalstil um: „Weil die Patientin nachts sehr unruhig war, wurde die Ärztin informiert.“ → „___ nächtlicher Unruhe der Patientin wurde die Ärztin informiert.“

  1. Wegen
  2. Weil
  3. Trotz
  4. Dank
Show the answer

A. Wegen

Rule: in the nominal style a causal 'weil'-clause becomes 'wegen' (or 'aufgrund') + genitive noun phrase: 'wegen nächtlicher Unruhe'. 'Weil' is a conjunction and cannot be followed by a noun phrase. 'Trotz' (despite) expresses the opposite logic. 'Dank' is used only for positive causes ('dank guter Pflege'), so it would sound ironic for restlessness.
